The Concept – Dynamic vs. Static

Post 2: The Concept – Dynamic vs. Static

Title: The Case of the Changing Address 🏠 Goal: Explain the concept of DHCP leasing (the root cause).

So, why does your computer lose the connection to the NAS drive?

It’s because of DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). Normally, your router acts like a hotel front desk. When a device connects, the router gives it a temporary room number (IP address), like 192.168.0.105.

But when the power goes out or the router restarts, the "hotel" clears its registry. When your NAS drive connects again, the router might give it a different room number, like 192.168.0.109. Your computer is still knocking on the door of .105, but nobody is home.

To fix this, we need to tell the router to give that device the same number, forever.
